Double T

The so-called „DOUBLE T“ or interlocking „I“ paver is an often-overlooked yet ubiquitous element. Since the 1960s, this concrete block has shaped the look of parking lots and sidewalks due to its affordability and durability. However, once these stones are removed from public spaces—often because of new design trends—they are usually discarded, as recycling them is more costly and time-consuming than purchasing new ones. Artist, designer, and archi- tect Thilo Reich addresses this issue by repurposing these discarded stones. He cuts them into slices, polishes and modifies them, and then reassembles them into new forms. Through his work, Reich transforms an everyday public space element into a striking brutalist object. The seemingly mundane paving stone is reimagined as a design object that, upon closer inspection, reveals its terrazzo-like surface.
